Last Show notes:

Night two in Philly felt a little simpler on the surface, but rest assured it went much deeper than that. While the first set was a bit of a snore for me on paper, that didn't mean it disappointed. But it was really the second set that stood out, save for the already over-played Time Turns Elastic, which- I love as an orchestral piece, but am still having a hard time stomaching as a show piece on tour. But seeing Esther back in the mix regularly is fantastic. Few songs capture both the whimsy and technical proficiency of Phish like that song does. And I guess a new rule of thumb for Phish 3.0 is that if you hear Divided Sky, you can pretty much bank on YEM in the same show. Hearkening back to the 91-93 era, I have to admit: I'm more than fine with that. Oh! Sweet Nuthin' was a nice treat as well, though the most intriguing choice of the night was putting Tweezer Reprise in the second set, a feat I've never seen live, and is rare to say the least. In any event- onward and upward: a series of sold out shows in Albany and Madison Square Garden, and a few single night stays in Maine and Virginia. Then it's 3 short weeks before the guys post up in Miami for a 4-night run that's sure to leave your pants wet.

Tonight's show:

Set I:

AC/DC Bag
Maze

My Mind's Got A Mind Of Its Own

Last night's show notes:

As predicted, the band is unleashing a fall tour unlike anything we've seen since the late 90s. I get the feeling like they are finally comfortable in their own skin for the first time in ages. And while many suspected that Phish 3.0 would simply be a retelling of great Phish-memories-past, it couldn't be further from that. Sure, they rely on a more consistent string of songs these days, and fine, the jams aren't the same that they were- but who would want that anyway. Not me. I'm glad to see them happy, sober (ahem, Trey) and ripping the roofs off arenas nationwide. Here's hoping tonight is more of the same!

Tonight's Show:

Set I:
Kill Devil Falls
46 Days*
Sugar Shack
Halley's Comet >
The Divided Sky
Sleep Again
Ocelot
Train Song
Wilson
Run Like An Antelope

Set II:

Esther
Time Turns Elastic
Tweezer Reprise

Encore:
Oh! Sweet Nuthin'

*a personal fave of the newer stuff. They could play this every show and I wouldn't get bored of it. Funky- reminiscent of the cow funk era Phish.

Last show summary:

You wondered after that first set in Syracuse if the boys were settling back into humdrum setlists with little to no jamming. Turns out, set two proved to be one of the most intriguing of the year thus far. It's clear that the boys like the fall, the midwest, and the northeast. So I think I can finally say PHISH IS BACK. All naysayers, bow before them. (and yes, I used to hate BBFCFM, but now I find it to be quite a treat.)

Last night's show notes:

While I can't say we got to enjoy the same light show you folks in Detroit got to (shown above), I think the music made up for it 50 times over. Torn and Frayed, reprised from it's debut at Festival 8 was a nice treat, as was the Ginseng Sullivan. The SOAM was one of the most intense jams I've seen them do in a long time. 2nd set was filled with gems including the seamless Rock & Roll opener into Ghost into If I Could. The band has proven that they didn't miss a step in their 5 year hiatus, but also acknowledged the fact that summer tour may have just been a warm up for them. I can't say I've seen 2 back to back nights this good in a while that weren't at a festival. Phish loves Cinci. Trey even made a point to say "they'd stay for a whole week if they could."

Comedic highlights included Trey acknowledging Page on the Marco Esquindolas line on Antelope, and the guy next to me farting so badly he had to leave his seat.

Previous show commentary:

Okay, so Detroit wasn't exactly anything to write home about. The Foam was nice, the AC/DC Bag opener was a crowd pleaser, and I always love seeing 46 Days and Bug in the set list. The stand out for me, however, was Mountains in the Mist which, after hearing live at Festival 8 for the first time, I couldn't be happier is back in the rotation. I feel like part of the acoustic set at 8 was a chance for the band to reconnect with some songs they'd otherwise have shelved for years and years to come...considering how spectacular the version was at 8, I can imagine they were excited to bring it back- ELECTRIC. Here's the version from 8, let me know what you think:

And now, without further ado, here's tonight's set list:

Phish setlist 11.18.09 Cobo Arena, Detroit, MI

Fresh off the heels of Festival 8, Phish returns tonight, opening their fall tour in Detroit, Michigan. I think it goes without saying that we here at Great Scott couldn't be happier that the band just didn't come back for Hampton in March, and instead have returned seemingly for good.

Song of the Day

Brand New- Jesus Christ

This obviously isn't the video, but man do I love this song. Quite an out of character single for the group as well, who cut their teeth on the mainstream with "Jude Law and the Semester Abroad," a much harder song with equally depressing lyrics.

hazaa for fall!

And since we never want any shortage of music, enjoy "Brian & Robert" from the festival 8 acoustic set, because, after all, "this one is for you..."

Brian & Robert 11.01.09 Indio, CA:

Phrom the Archives

For you obsessive collectors out there who just can't get enough Phish, I give you "Backwards Food for Backwards Folk" recorded in 1985 (or so the legend goes) by Trey on 4-track.

For my money, this recording sounds much to pristine to be a 4-track recording, not to mention the fact that Trey's voice sounds much more mature than early recordings. But hey, the song is awesome, and I'll take what I can get. Enjoy!

Electric Method Goes Phish

Eclectic Method Goes Phish from Eclectic Method on Vimeo.

As seen before the Halloween set this past weekend in Indio (though, incidentally, they did clip the Jagger sex tape at the end, and who can blame them...it was a sex tape, right?)

I'll post my videos of the experience in the coming days. Hazaa Festival 8!
